Yaksa Roast – Guardian Of The Bold Cup
In Thai mythology, the Yaksa is a powerful guardian spirit. Fierce, bold, and protective of what is sacred. You will find them standing at the entrances of Thailand’s most revered temples, larger than life and impossible to ignore. When we were looking for a name worthy of our darkest and most powerful coffee, nothing felt more fitting.
The Yaksa Roast is also a deeply personal coffee for Coffee Culture founder Susan, who brings both Thai and Finnish heritage to everything she does. In both cultures the spirit of strength, resilience, and authenticity runs deep. The Yaksa Roast carries all of that in every single cup.
Some mornings call for something bold, dark, and intense.
Coffee that hits the moment it touches your lips and stays with you long after the last sip. If that sounds like your kind of cup, this coffee was made for you.
The Yaksa Roast proudly sits at the darkest end of the Coffee Culture roast collection, part of a small and very bold family of French Roast coffees that also includes The Godfather and our Organic Doi Mod French Roast. Yes, we take our dark roasts seriously around here! French Roast is the point where the beans are pushed to their absolute limit, coaxing out the deepest, smokiest, most intense flavours the coffee has to offer. It takes real skill and confidence to roast this dark without tipping into burnt or bitter territory, and our roasters know exactly where that line is.
Not just any bean makes the cut for this particular French Roast. We specifically selected Grade A+ Pang Khon Arabica for this one, the highest grade in our Chiang Rai harvest, because at this roast level the quality of the bean is everything. Lesser grades simply did not produce the unique taste profile we were after, one that would differentiate itself from The Godfather and the Doi Mod. The result is a French Roast with real depth, real character, and a smoothness that genuinely surprises people who expect dark to mean harsh.
The result is a cup that Starbucks French Roast fans will recognise immediately but with something more interesting underneath. Deep smoky notes, bittersweet dark chocolate, a whisper of toasted almonds, and a hint of caramelised sugar that lingers in the finish. The acidity is naturally low, the body is full and velvety, and the aftertaste is surprisingly smooth for such a dark roast. It is intense without being aggressive, bold without being brutal.
If you have always loved French Roast but wondered what it would taste like with a genuinely exceptional single origin Thai Arabica at its heart, now you know.
From Chiang Rai’s Cool Mountain Highlands To Your Boldest Cup Yet
Pang Khon is located in the cool highlands of Chiang Rai, grown at 1,200 to 1,500 metres above sea level. A more remote and elevated growing region that produces coffee with a distinctly different character to its Chiang Mai neighbours. At this altitude the cool mountain air slows the development of the coffee cherry, concentrating the sugars and flavours inside and giving the beans a natural density and body that makes them exceptionally well suited to darker roast levels. What sets Pang Khon apart is its full body and aromatic complexity, rewarding slower brew methods like pour over, drip, and French press where the layers have room to open up. The farmers here have been growing coffee together for over 30 years and it shows in the consistency and care that goes into every single harvest.
Pang Khon is also the base bean for several Coffee Culture products including the Pang Khon Arabica, the Siam Roast Super Star blend, the Siam Roast Nespresso compatible capsules, the Siam Roast drip bags, and now the Yaksa Roast.
