Thailand’s Coffee Market Is Booming. What’s Driving the Growth?

Thailand’s Coffee Market Boom - Rising Demand, Global Appeal, and Climbing Prices - coffee culture thailand

Thailand’s coffee market continues to experience robust growth, but challenges for local farmers cast a shadow over the industry’s expansion. Between 2022 and 2024, many Thai coffee farmers faced significant hurdles as corporate price controls dominated the market. With 2025 on the horizon, shifting dynamics are significantly influencing coffee prices.

In 2023, Thailand produced 16,575 tonnes of coffee, comprising 48.2% Arabica and 51.8% Robusta. However, domestic coffee consumption is outpacing this production, creating a significant supply gap. This scarcity has led to increased competition for Thai-grown coffee, particularly Arabica beans.

On the export front, Thai coffee exports have shown consistent growth. In 2023, coffee exports reached a value of $126 million (this includes instant coffee, green beans and roasted Thai coffee), marking a 15.6% increase from 2022. While this growth opens opportunities for farmers in global markets, it simultaneously reduces the supply available for domestic consumption. As a result, prices for locally farmed and roasted Thai coffee are on the rise.

Specialty Thai Coffee Drives Local & Global Demand

Thailand’s specialty coffee sector is flourishing both at home and abroad. Premium-grade Thai Arabica, grown in regions such as Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, has garnered global attention for its quality and unique flavor profiles. This dual demand—from Thai specialty cafes and international buyers—puts additional pressure on supply, driving up prices in both markets.

The combined forces of surging domestic consumption and expanding export activity have tightened the supply of Thai-grown coffee, causing prices to rise. While these trends benefit local farmers by providing access to export markets, they challenge the accessibility of Thai coffee. As demand for Thai coffee continues to grow, finding a balance between capitalizing on export opportunities and supporting the domestic market will be crucial to ensuring the long-term sustainability of Thailand’s coffee industry.
