Not all coffee beans are the same. The two species you’ll come across most often are Arabica (Coffea arabica) and Robusta (Coffea canephora). Same family, very different personalities.
One of the biggest differences between them is their caffeine content. In general, Robusta contains almost twice as much caffeine as Arabica, which is why coffees or blends with a higher percentage of Robusta often deliver a stronger caffeine kick. Arabica, on the other hand, is typically smoother, sweeter, and lower in caffeine, making it a favourite for those who prefer a gentler coffee experience. Of course, flavour is only one part of the story. Growing conditions, roasting, and brewing methods all play a role in your cup.
Here in Thailand, Thai Arabica is mostly grown in the cooler, higher elevations of the north, particularly in provinces such as Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Thai Robusta on the other prefers a warmer, more humid climate, and so the south is their preferred location. With regions like Chumphon, Ranong and Surat Thani being well known for Thai Robusta coffee. That said, you’ll also find Robusta grown in parts of northern Thailand.
Coffee Bean With The Most Caffeine
Which one of the two: Arabica vs Robusta packs a bigger punch? ☕⚡Let’s break it down, the fun way.
The Caffeine Face-Off
Here’s the headline everyone actually wants to know:
Arabica: around 1.2-1.5% caffeine
Robusta: around 2.2-2.7% caffeine
Think of Arabica as a friendly morning nudge, while Robusta is the mate who yanks the blankets off and tells you it’s time to get moving. 😄
Nature has its reasons. Caffeine actually works as a natural bug repellent for the coffee plant. Robusta grows in hotter, buggier, lower-altitude regions, so it evolved to produce more caffeine as self-defense. Arabica, on the other hand, grows up in cooler, higher-altitude spots where there’s less to fight off, so it never needed as much.
Basically: Robusta is the tough, low-maintenance one. Arabica is the delicate one that needs the right conditions to thrive.
Difference in Caffeine in Robusta vs. Arabica Coffee

Where You’ll Actually Taste This
- Your favorite specialty pour-over? Almost always Arabica.
- That rich, crema-topped Italian espresso? Often a coffee blend, with a bit of Robusta added for body and caffeine kick.
- Instant coffee? Frequently Robusta, since it’s hardier and cheaper to produce at scale.
More Caffeine ≠ Better Taste
Here’s the twist: more caffeine doesn’t automatically mean better taste. In fact, whether a coffee tastes “better” really depends on what you’re looking for. If you
- Are after a strong, bold coffee with a heavier body, more bitterness, and an extra caffeine kick. Then yes, Robusta might be exactly what you’re looking for.
- Prefer a smoother, sweeter, and more balanced cup. Then Arabica is often the better choice. Its lower caffeine content is part of what allows its natural flavours to shine, with tasting notes ranging from fruity and floral to caramel, chocolate, and nuts, depending on where it’s grown and how it’s roasted.
- Enjoy a stronger morning coffee but don’t necessarily want the intensity of a 100% Robusta. If you want the best of both worlds. An Arabica and Robusta blend combines the smoothness, sweetness, and complexity of Arabica with the body, crema, and extra caffeine of Robusta. That’s one of the reasons it’s so popular in traditional Italian-style espresso blends.
