Easy Step-by-Step Guide + 5 Key Tips To Using A Coffee Drip Bag

Drip coffee bags are one of the easiest ways to enjoy fresh, quality coffee anywhere, no machine required. All you need is hot water and a mug, cup, or even a glass. That’s exactly why we never travel without them. We even keep one in the car’s centre console at all times, just in case. They’re the perfect backup for those moments when the only options are instant coffee or a Robusta-heavy blend so strong it feels like it could strip paint. We’re smooth coffee lovers at heart (yes, milk in our coffee, always), so having a good drip bag on hand means we’re never stuck settling for a cup we don’t actually enjoy.

What Is A Coffee Drip Bag

In a nutshell, a coffee drip bag is a single-serve coffee filter that contains pre-ground coffee and is designed to brew directly over your cup. Simply tear open the sachet, unfold the paper arms, hook them over the rim of your mug/cup/glass, and slowly pour hot water through the coffee grounds. In just a few minutes, you’ll have a freshly brewed cup of coffee without needing a coffee machine, French press, or pour-over dripper.

If you’ve only ever drunk instant coffee because it was the most convenient option, or simply out of necessity. A drip coffee bag is your ticket to saying goodbye to instant coffee forever. You still get the convenience, but with the flavour, aroma, and quality of freshly brewed coffee.

Brewing A Coffee Drip Bag

Here’s an easy step by step guide on how to use a coffee drip bag. First of all here’s everything you’ll need to make a fresh brewed cup of coffee anytime, anywhere:

  • 1 coffee drip bag
  • 1 mug or cup
  • Hot water (freshly boiled, then let it sit for 30–60 seconds before brewing)
  • 3-4 minutes of your time

Step 1: Boil your water and let it rest

Bring water to a boil, then let it sit for about 30-60 seconds. Water that’s too hot can burn (scald) the coffee and bring out bitterness.

Step 2: Open the drip bag

Tear open the packaging and unfold the two side wings of the drip filter.

Step 3: Hook it onto your mug/ cup

Hang the drip bag’s side flaps over the rim of your mug so the filter sits securely inside, suspended above the bottom.

Step 4: The bloom

The most important step. Pour a small amount of hot water enough to wet all the coffee grounds and let it sit for 30 seconds. This is called “blooming” and it lets the coffee release trapped gas so the flavor extracts evenly.

Step 5: Pour the rest slowly

In slow, circular motions, pour the remaining hot water over the coffee grounds in 2–3 stages, pausing briefly between each pour to be grateful for the good things in your life. Fill your cup to your desired strength, but as a general starting point, we recommend:

  • 10g drip bag: 150–180ml of water
  • 14g drip bag: 210–230ml of water
  • 16g drip bag: 240–260ml of water

Prefer a stronger cup? Use a little less water. Like a lighter brew? Add a little more.

Step 6: Enjoy your fresh brewed cup of coffee

Once the water has fully filtered through, carefully lift out the drip bag and throw the drip bag away. Enjoy your coffee as it is, or add sugar to taste.

If you prefer your coffee with milk, we recommend adding hot milk rather than cold milk to keep your coffee warm and full of flavour.

5 Key Tips When Brewing A Coffee Drip Bag

  1. Mind your water temperature. Using boiled water right away often makes the coffee bitter. To preserve the flavor notes of the coffee let your boiling water cool down for about 30 seconds (max 60 seconds).
  2. Always bloom first. Skipping the 30-second bloom is the most common mistake. It’s a small step that makes a big difference in your cup of coffee.
  3. Pour slowly, not all at once. Dumping water in one go floods the grounds and leads to uneven extraction. Slow, steady pours in stages give a smoother, more balanced cup.
  4. Use it fresh. Drip bags are best enjoyed within their shelf life and shortly after opening, once exposed to air, the grounds start to lose aroma and flavor.

Drip Bags Are a Game-Changer

For many people, the biggest game changer isn’t that drip coffee bags let you brew coffee without special equipment. It’s that they mean you never have to settle for instant coffee again.

You still get all the convenience, just add hot water, but instead of a flat, one-dimensional cup, you get the aroma, flavour, and freshness of real brewed coffee. No coffee machine, dripper, scales, or paper filters required.

They’re perfect for travel, keeping in your car for coffee emergencies, taking on camping trips, bringing to the office, or simply enjoying at home when you want a great cup without the fuss. Once you’ve experienced the difference, it’s surprisingly hard to go back to instant coffee.
