A Step By Step Guide To Cleaning and Descaling Your Nespresso Machine

If you own a Nespresso coffee machine, you’ve probably wondered “How do I clean and descale my Nespresso machine?” It’s one of the most common questions, afterall a delicious cup of coffee starts with a clean machine. Over time, coffee oils, mineral buildup, and old water residue can quietly affect the taste of every cup you brew, even the best single-origin coffee. So we’ve created a simple guide on how you can keep your Nespresso machine running well and tasting fresh by simply descaling your machine every 3 months (for home use).

Keeping Your Nespresso Machine Clean and Descaled

So why do you need to clean and descale your Nespresso coffee machine? Every time water passes through your machine, it leaves behind trace minerals (limescale) and small amounts of coffee oil. Over time, this buildup can:

  • Slow down or block water flow
  • Cause uneven extraction and bitter or flat-tasting coffee
  • Shorten the lifespan of your machine
  • Lead to error lights or reduced pressure

Most manufacturers recommend descaling every 3 months, or after roughly 300 capsules, whichever comes first. Daily and weekly cleaning takes just a few minutes and makes a real difference.

Daily Cleaning (2 minutes) Recommendations

  1. Empty and rinse the used capsule container after each use so old capsules don’t sit and dry out inside.
  2. Empty the drip tray and rinse with warm water.
  3. Wipe the capsule holder area with a damp cloth to remove any coffee residue.
  4. Run a rinse cycle with water only (no capsule) to flush the line after brewing your last cup of the day. Around 100 – 150 ml, which basically is either a Lungo or two espresso shots. This will help flush out the fresh coffee oils and any remaining coffee grounds.

Weekly Cleaning (5 minutes) Routine For Your Nespresso Machine

  1. Remove the water tank, drip tray, and capsule container and wash them in warm soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
  2. Wipe down the outlet nozzle (where coffee flows out) with a soft, damp cloth. This is where oils build up fastest.
  3. Refill the water tank with fresh, filtered water. Stagnant water in the tank affects flavor.

Step By Step Guide To Descale Your Nespresso Machine

Keeping your Nespresso machine in top condition is really easy. With a regular cleaning and descaling routine, you’ll enjoy better tasting coffee, help extend the life of your machine, and ensure every cup is as delicious as the first. Here’s our step-by-step guide to cleaning and descaling your Nespresso machine.

You’ll need a Nespresso descaling kit (or a food-safe citric acid descaling solution) and a container to catch the rinse water.

  1. Turn off and empty the machine.

Remove any coffee pod, empty the capsule container and drip tray.

  2. Prepare the descaling solution.

Mix according to the kit instructions, usually the full sachet with 500ml of water, and pour it into the water tank.

  3. Place a large container under the coffee outlet to catch the liquid.

  4. Enter descaling mode. This varies slightly by model:

Original line (button models): Hold the lungo and espresso buttons together for a few seconds until they blink alternately.
    .
Touch-screen models (Vertuo, some Original models): Check the machine’s descaling icon or menu, usually accessed by holding the button for 3–5 seconds.

  5. Run the descaling cycle.

The machine will pump the solution through in stages, pausing partway. Empty the container when prompted and continue.

  6. Rinse the tank thoroughly

Rinse the tank and refill with fresh water once the descaling solution has fully run through.

  7. Run 2–3 cycles of clean water only

Run another 2 to 3 cycles of clean water only through the machine to flush out any remaining solution. Discard this water; don’t drink it.

  8. Final wash

Wash the water tank, drip tray, and capsule container one more time before your next brew.

Tips for Better-Tasting Coffee Long-Term

  • Use filtered water.
  • Don’t leave water sitting in the tank for more than a day or two.
  • Store your coffee capsules in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • If your machine has been unused for more than a week, run a water-only cycle before brewing.
  • For a delicious cup of freshly roasted coffee, try our Coffee Culture Thailand biodegradable coffee pods. Each capsule is filled with premium Thai coffee, roasted to highlight the unique flavours of Thailand’s finest coffee-growing regions. Better yet, our capsule shells are home compostable, so you can enjoy exceptional coffee while reducing your environmental impact.
