A Step By Step Guide To Cleaning and Descaling Your Dolce Gusto Machine
Dolce Gusto machines are simple to use, but a few small habits make a big difference in taste and machine lifespan. Like any other coffee machine, over time the coffee residue, mineral buildup, and old water can affect the flavour of every cup you brew. That’s why we’ve created this simple step by step guide to help you get the most from your Dolce Gusto machine, from brewing your first cup to keeping it clean and running smoothly with regular descaling every 3 months.
Daily Cleaning (2 minutes) For Your Dolce Gusto
Before we jump into the step-by-step guide on how to clean and descale your Dolce Gusto coffee machine, here are some tips on daily and weekly cleaning to keep your machine in top shape. Spending just 2 minutes after each use keeps your machine free from coffee oils and residue that can affect flavour over time. Small habits, done consistently, make a big difference.
- Remove and empty the drip tray after each use.
- Rinse the cup support and drip grid under warm water.
- Wipe the capsule area with a damp cloth to remove any drips or residue.
- If your machine has a removable outlet nozzle, rinse it separately, this is where flavor buildup happens fastest.
Weekly Cleaning (5 minutes) Tips For Your Machine
- Remove the water tank, drip tray, and drip grid and wash in warm soapy water.
- Rinse everything thoroughly to remove all soap residue, then dry.
- Wipe down the outer body of the machine with a soft, damp cloth.
- Refill the tank with fresh water, don’t leave old water sitting for days.
A Step By Step Guide To Descaling Your Dolce Gusto Coffee Machine
Descaling should be done roughly every 3 months, or sooner if you’re using tap water (especially in Thailand).
What you’ll need: a Dolce Gusto descaling kit (or food-safe citric acid solution), and a large container.
- Turn off the machine and remove any Dolce Gusto compatible coffee capsules from the holder.
- Empty the water tank and remove the drip tray.
- Mix the descaling solution according to the kit instructions and pour it into the water tank.
- Close the lever without inserting a capsule.
- Place a large container under the outlet to catch the liquid.
- Start descaling mode, most models enter this by holding down the brew button for several seconds until the light changes pattern. Check your specific model’s manual icon if unsure.
- Let the solution run through in stages, pausing and emptying the container as needed.
- Rinse the tank thoroughly, then refill with clean water.
- Run 2–3 rinse cycles with water only, discarding this water rather than drinking it, to flush out any leftover solution.
- Wash the drip tray and grid once more before brewing your next cup.
A Few Extra Tips
- Use filtered water especially if you live in Thailand. As tap water accelerates limescale buildup faster than anything else. Plus you’ll need to descale your machine less often when using filtered water. And it brews a better tasting cup of coffee.
- Never leave a used capsule in the holder — old capsules sitting in the machine leave residue and moisture that builds up over time.
- Store capsules in a cool, dry place — away from sunlight and humidity. Even the best coffee won’t taste right if the capsule has been compromised before it gets to be enjoyed.
- If your machine hasn’t been used in over a week, run a water-only cycle before your first brew.
- Run a water-only cycle after a week of no use — like the Nespresso coffee machines, if your Dolce Gusto machine has been sitting unused for a week or more. Make sure to flush it through before your first brew to clear any stale water from the lines.
- Try our delicious Dolce Gusto coffee pods filled with Thai coffee — whether you enjoy a single origin Thai arabica from Chiang Mai or an espresso blend that brings both Thai arabica and Thai robusta together, there’s a cup for every taste.
