The Story Behind Our Decaf Coffee in Thailand

Because Coffee Lovers Shouldn’t Have to Choose Between Sleep and Coffee

A personal story by Susan Borvornpotsakul Villota

Our Thai decaf coffee didn’t begin in a roastery or around a boardroom table. It began with a simple question: why should coffee lovers have to choose between enjoying great coffee and getting a good night’s sleep? That question eventually led us on a journey to create one of Thailand’s few premium decaf coffees.

How One Cup of Coffee Changed Everything

Like many coffee lovers, I thought nothing of making a coffee after 4pm. By 3am I was still awake. It wasn’t until the next morning, when a colleague admitted she’d had exactly the same experience, that I realised what had happened.

The next morning I arrived at work feeling exhausted. One of our team members walked in looking just as tired, so I asked if she was feeling okay. She smiled and said, “I just couldn’t sleep last night.” As we talked, we realised we’d both done the same thing the day before. It had been a rainy afternoon, we’d both been feeling a little sleepy, and we’d each made ourselves our fourth cup of coffee much later than we normally would. Suddenly, it all made sense.

It Wasn't Just Happening to Us

That conversation made me think about my own family. My mom and my aunt have always been sensitive to caffeine. Even a single cup in the afternoon can leave them wide awake well past bedtime, so for years they’d simply avoid coffee after lunch or settle for alternatives that never really tasted like coffee at all.

Why We Created Our Thai Decaf Coffee

The more I thought about it, the more I realised this wasn’t just our story. Some people simply can’t tolerate caffeine. Others choose to limit it for their own reasons, whether that’s improving their sleep, reducing anxiety, for medical advice, or simply because they don’t want the extra caffeine that day. Whatever the reason, they all had one thing in common: they still loved coffee.

That’s when it hit me. Why should anyone have to give up the taste, the ritual, and the comfort of a great cup of coffee simply because they don’t want the caffeine?

That question became the reason we launched our Thai decaf coffee. Not as a compromise, but as a coffee that lets people enjoy everything they love about coffee, whenever they want, regardless of whether they can’t have caffeine or simply choose not to.

Decaf Coffee Should Never Feel Like a Compromise

One of the biggest misconceptions about decaf is that it’s a compromise, a lesser version of “real” coffee. And to be honest, I completely understand why so many people think that.

Over the years, I’d tried decaf coffees that had a strange chemical taste, lacked body, or simply didn’t taste like coffee at all. They left me thinking that if this was what decaf coffee tasted like, I’d rather skip coffee altogether. So after 4pm, that’s exactly what I did. As much as I wanted another cup, I’d choose sleep over settling for a coffee I didn’t enjoy.

The Search for a Great Thai Decaf Coffee

When we decided to create our own Thai decaf coffee, we knew one thing from the very beginning. We weren’t going to offer a decaf simply to tick a box in our product range. If we couldn’t find a decaf coffee that we genuinely enjoyed drinking ourselves, we weren’t going to launch one at all.

So we set out to find a decaf that tasted like the coffee we were proud of. It had to be sourced from Thai farmers, roasted with the same care as every other coffee in our lineup, and most importantly, taste like great coffee, not “good for a decaf.”

Thankfully, modern decaffeination has come a long way. Today’s best methods preserve most of the coffee’s natural flavour and aroma.

The Decaf Coffee Challenge We Didn’t Expect

Knowing what we wanted was the easy part. Finding it was something else entirely. Decaffeinated coffee wasn’t something you came across very often in Thailand. While decaffeination technology had advanced significantly in other parts of the world, it simply wasn’t widely available here. We spent months searching, asking questions and exploring different options, only to keep running into dead ends. More than once, we wondered if creating a Thai decaf coffee was even possible.

Then we found it…

We finally discovered a decaffeination coffee grown and processed in Thailand that preserved everything we loved about a great cup of coffee. Its body, aroma and character. It proved that decaf didn’t have to taste like a compromise after all.

But that wasn’t the end of the journey.

Changing People’s Minds About Thai Decaf

Finding the coffee was only half the battle. The next challenge was convincing people to try it. Whenever we told customers we had a Thai decaf coffee, the reaction was often the same.

“Thai decaf? Can it really be any good?”

Many assumed a Thai decaf coffee couldn’t possibly be as good as imported alternatives. We understood the hesitation. Rather than asking customers to jump straight into a 100% Thai decaf, we first introduced blends that combined our Thai decaf with selected imported decaf coffees. It gave customers a familiar starting point while allowing them to experience the quality of Thai decaf for themselves.

What happened next surprised even us.

Once customers tasted our Thai decaf coffee, many realised it wasn’t what they expected. It was smooth, full of flavour and unmistakably Thai. Instead of tasting like a compromise, it tasted like the coffee they would usually enjoy, just without the caffeine. Over time, more and more customers chose our Thai decaf over the imported alternatives. That shift gave us the confidence to gradually remove almost all of the imported decaf coffees from our range. Today, we’ve kept just one imported option because our customers made the choice for us.

This isn’t just for people who can’t tolerate caffeine at all. It’s also for:

  • Anyone who wants a coffee after dinner without affecting their sleep

  • Parents, night-shift workers, and anyone whose schedule doesn’t leave room for a caffeine crash
  • Coffee lovers who simply want more hours in the day to enjoy a good cup ^_^

Offering decaf was never about adding another SKU for the sake of it. It came from watching people we care about quietly opt out of something they loved, and deciding that didn’t have to be the choice. If you’ve ever skipped your evening coffee out of self-preservation, this one’s for you.
