Welcome to the wonderfully confusing world of coffee pods. If you’ve just bought a pod machine or you’re moving on from ground coffee, you’ve probably realised that “coffee pods” isn’t one thing at all. It’s a whole family of different systems, each with its own capsule shape, machine, and way of brewing coffee. You might come across names like Nespresso, Nespresso Vertuo, Dolce Gusto, Caffitaly, Keurig and ESE coffee pods. Some coffee pods are easy to find in Thailand, while others are rare or not available at all. That’s why buying the wrong pods is one of the most common mistakes new coffee lovers make. Don’t worry though. By the end of our blog, you’ll know exactly which pod works with which machine, what options are available in Thailand, and how to choose the right pod for your setup.
9 Different Types Of Coffee Pods & Which Are Available In Thailand
So what are the different types of coffee pods and which are available in Thailand?

1. Nespresso Original
The classic small aluminium or plastic capsule that started the pod category. Machines are widely sold here, and it’s the format most Thai and international brands make compatible capsules for, including ours.

2. Nespresso Vertuo
A different Nespresso system altogether. Larger capsules, a barcode the machine reads to set brew size and pressure, and a different extraction style. Original capsules don’t fit Vertuo machines, and vice versa.

3. Dolce Gusto
Nescafé’s own pod system. Bigger range of drinks, from lattes to hot chocolate to iced coffee, and a completely different capsule shape from Nespresso.

4. ESE pods
The 44mm paper pod format, sometimes called cialde. No plastic or aluminium shell, just a sealed paper pod. Common in machines built to the Italian ESE standard, often linked to brands like Illy.

5. Illy Iperespresso
Illy’s own proprietary capsule system, separate from ESE pods despite sharing a brand name. Only works in Iperespresso machines.

6. Lavazza A Modo Mio
Lavazza’s own capsule shape, not compatible with any other system on this list.

7. Caffitaly
An Italian system found in specific machine brands. Smaller footprint globally, and in Thailand.

8. Keurig K-Cup
Huge in North America, minimal presence here. Mostly found through importers or online.

9. Tassimo
A pod system developed by Bosch that uses T-Discs with built-in barcodes. Popular in parts of Europe, but rarely found in Thailand.

4 Places To Buy Coffee Pods In Thailand
1. Supermarkets Are where most people start.
You’ll usually find the official Dolce Gusto and Nespresso Original ranges, along with the occasional Starbucks capsule. They’re convenient, but the selection is often limited and focused on the big international brands.
2. Brand boutiques, such as Nespresso stores, offer the complete official collection and plenty of seasonal releases.
They’re perfect if you want the authentic Nespresso experience, although you’ll typically pay premium prices and won’t find compatible capsules from independent roasters.
3. Online coffee stores have become one of the easiest ways to buy coffee pods in Thailand.
Retailers like Coffee Culture Thailand offer freshly roasted Nespresso Original compatible home compostable capsules and Dolce Gusto compatible pods, featuring single origin Thai coffees and exclusive blends you won’t usually find in supermarkets. Many also provide tasting notes, origin stories, and brewing advice, making it much easier to discover coffees you’ll genuinely enjoy.
4, Specialty coffee shops and local roasters are a hidden gem.
Some independent cafés and roasters stock compatible capsules and pod machines alongside their beans, making them a great place to discover small-batch coffees and get recommendations from people who actually roast the coffee.
